Course Description:

Patients have oral problems you have a variety of pharmacological solutions.  Which one(s) do you use, when, and why? All these questions are answered in this fast-moving presentation that focuses on the practical application of Dental Pharmacology and the effective use of over-the-counter dental products.

Subjects included: treatment of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections; determining when and why to use prophylactic antibiotics; simple ways to treat canker sores and herpes; controlling pain with drugs; and the most effective over–the-counter dental drugs in numerous categories. Drs. Jacobsen and Christensen also identify the 3 dental drugs you should NOT use in order to avoid 99% of drug interactions.   This presentation will make handling the pharmaceutical needs in your practice easier and more effective.

Course Title:  Biologic and Physiologic Cellular Response to Bone Grafts

Presenter: Maurice Valen

Course Time: 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST

Course Description:

Discuss the biologic and physiologic cellular response to dense bone grafting filler materials that may facilitate new bone formation versus bioactive resorbable crystal structure that is easily digested by the osteoclast cells, enhanced by surgical technique after tooth extraction. These materials are also used for implant shielding surgical techniques. Learn the comparison between dense Filler Materials, human bone crystal structure, and user friendly cost effective bioactive crystal structure combined with collagen composite materials that have physical and mechanical properties similar to human bone mineral as demonstrated clinically by mineral derived from bioactive resorbable calcium apatite crystal clusters (i.e.,OsteoGen). Very dense Filler Materials (i.e., ceramic HA, ceramic TCP, bovine ceramic, glass and plastics promote fibrous tissue encapsulation and fragment by giant cells over decades rather than years. The fragmentation of Filler Materials is transported to larger organ filters in the body (i.e., lymph nodes, lungs and spleen) does compromise patients immune systems. OsteoGen crystals have similar physicochemical and crystallographic mineral properties to trabecular human allografts with the advantage to control connective tissue migration.

Presenter Biographies:

Maurice Valen has been actively involved in research and product development for over 50 years. He conducted his basic research in bone physiology, animal and human clinical studies, and implant material testing systems at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) Robert Schultz Orthopaedic Institute, as an Adjunct Assistant Professor from 1980 -1986, and the Orthopaedic Department at Joint Diseases Hospital and the Hospital for Special Surgery Orthopaedic Division, followed by development of 10 products and 24 patents. He lectures world-wide and has published many clinical and scientific papers and two chapters in two books in the field of dental implants as the developer of bone grafts and implants. He was formerly with New York University College of Dentistry, Departments of Biomaterials and Dental Implants as a Lecturer on Restorative and Prosthodontic Sciences. He is a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantology, served on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Implant Dentistry’s Research Foundation, and the honored recipient of the Academy’s Isaiah Lew Research Award for continued dedication to the advancement of implantology. By invitation, on two separate occasions, he has lectured before the Dental Products Panel of the Food and Drug Administration on the topics of dental implants and cell response to various “bone filling and augmentation materials” and has received government grants for putty grafts with or without BMP.

Course Title:  Simplifying Grafting Procedures utilizing OsteoGen Plugs and Strips

Presenter: Dr. Jason Kim

Course Time: 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM EST

Course Description:

It is widely known that once a tooth is extracted, the resorption of bone is a guaranteed phenomena. By preserving the site with some type of bone graft material will prevent that site from losing its volume in both the vertical and horizontal dimensions. Trying to preserve the traditional socket has always been challenged by what material to use that will give predictability and longevity. Using the OsteoGen plugs and strips enables the clinician to simplify grafting making it predictable, minimally invasive and very cost effective. This presentation will evaluate the benefits of socket and ridge preservation. The role of atraumatic extraction will be discussed along with understanding basic grafting principles. The benefits and clinical technique for using OsteoGen plugs and strips will be presented through case presentations.

Presenter Biographies:

Dr. Jason Kim is a Clinical Assistant Professor,  New York University College of Dentistry, Dept. of Cariology and Comprehensive Care,  Implantology Program- Surgical Director; Diplomate, American Board of Oral Implantology; Honored Fellow, American Academy of Implant Dentistry; Diplomate, International Congress of Oral Implantology; Member, Academy of Osseointegration;  Faculty for NYU-Zimmer Institute.  Board of Trustees, American Academy of Implant Dentistry; Past President, Northeast District, American Academy of Implant Dentistry; Co-Founder and Co-Director of Long Island Implant Center; Founder and Director of AAID Long Island Implant Study Club.  Currently attending Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, Dept. of Periodontics for certificate in Periodontics; Private Practice in Flushing, New York.  Dr. Kim lectures nationally and internationally in the field of dental implants, bone grafting, soft tissue augmentation, treatment planning, and the use of biologics.

Course Description:

How many times do you look into a patient’s oral cavity and wonder what condition or lesion you are observing and more importantly what are you going to do with it? Because most of dental practice is concerned with restorative dentistry and surgical procedures, the less commonly occurring areas of oral diagnosis and treatment are often overlooked. Much has changed in the last several years that will influence your diagnosis and treatment of these frustrating and often painful oral conditions.

This presentation includes the following and other information:

A logical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of aphthous stomatitis

A logical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of oral lichen planus

A logical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic ulcerative stomatitis

A logical approach to the diagnosis and treatment of benign mucous membrane pemphigoid

Applications of practical clinical information for everyday practice

This presentation will assist you greatly in identifying and treating these conditions and will allow you to better treat your patients with this new knowledge.
